1947 Mack Fire Truck

Being one of the most famous manufacturer's of fire apparatus, the Mack Trucks of Allentown Pennsylvania began building their fire engines around 1911.  Following the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, the manufacturers of Mack Trucks were placed under government regulations and the majority of production was devoted to the war.  Since many men had used the Mack Truck during the War and knew of its durability and reliability, the Mack Fire Truck was a product that they felt comfortable in using and in purchasing once World War II had ended.  In 1948, the City of Burlington purchased a 1947 Mack Fire Truck for $8,160 which was then used as the first responder to city fires.  The 1947 Mack Fire Truck was originally built in 1946 in Long Island, New York and it was fully equipped with a 130 hp/500 gallon pumper.  The trademark "Bull Dog" sits atop the radiator shell to emphasize how tough and reliable the truck is.  The 1947 Mack Fire Truck in our collection was never modified and is still all original.  It was used by the City of Burlington until 1990, at which time is was donated to its new home here at the Coffey County Historical Museum.
