Model 1816 Springfield musket
This is a percussion conversion .69 caliber Springfield musket. The side plate is stamped “US” and “Spring/Field 1827” under an Eagle stamp. The trigger guard is stamped “SP” and the left side plate is stamped “S”. The 1816 musket was originally produced in the Harpers Ferry and Springfield Arsenals between 1816-44, taking the design from the famous 1777 French muskets. It was first produced in large quantities, in the flintlock version and later converted to percussion, to be used during the Civil War. |
