Topographical Model of Kansas

llan McCollum, an artist living in New York, donated this topographical model in September of 2003. He had created two models, one of Kansas and the other of Missouri, for his exhibit at the Grand Arts Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. Allan first needed to create a mold of the two states, and for this, he enlisted the help of a company based in California. The company uses a program called Geographical Information Systems, which is obtained from the United States Government. Once Allan had completed his artwork for his exhibit, he reused the molds and created over 250 topographical models from a mixture of cement and plaster. These models were then donated to regional historical museums over Kansas and Missouri. It should be noted that the geological features on the model of Kansas have been slightly exaggerated to give an enhanced depiction of the states elevation.
